Job Description

At a glance
Company: voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak
Location: Birmingham, AL
Job Type: Full Time
Experience: 2+ years in manufacturing or process engineering

Why this job is worth considering

voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak has been building special trackwork for North America's railroads for over 160 years, and this Birmingham plant is part of that supply chain. As Manufacturing Engineer, you'd own the processes that turn raw material into finished trackwork components — designing and improving the workflows, tooling, and layouts that keep the plant running efficiently and producing to spec. It's a role with real ownership: you're working directly with production, quality, and engineering to drive continuous improvement rather than just reporting on it.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and hold quality
  • Support new product introduction through process validation, documentation, and quality planning
  • Create and maintain SOPs and work instructions, and investigate quality issues using structured problem-solving
  • Analyze production data to find bottlenecks and drive corrective action on equipment uptime and reliability
  • Lead continuous improvement work using Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen methodologies
  • Identify and implement cost-reduction initiatives through process improvement and waste elimination
  • Partner with Quality, Supply Chain, Maintenance, and R&D teams on cross-functional projects

What we're looking forRequired

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing or process engineering (varies by level)
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes — machining, assembly, injection molding, and similar
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement tools
  • Proficiency with CAD software and/or ERP/MRP systems
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred

  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
  • Experience with automation, robotics, or Industry 4.0 technologies
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and quality systems such as ISO 9001
  • Project management experience

Pay, benefits and schedule

Pay wasn't published for this role. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, company-paid life and disability insurance, paid holidays and vacation, a retirement plan with matching contributions, tuition assistance, and an employee wellness and recognition program.
